The Walk to Gethsemane, part 1

John 18:

—I. Verse 1a, “When Jesus had spoken these words”—probably the words of his preceding prayer in chapter 17, but it brought back to my mind all the following memorable teaching of Jesus as well. One powerful quote after another.

—13:14, “If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet.”

—13:21, “One of you will betray Me.”

—13:34, “A new commandment I give to you that you love one another.”

—14:6, “I am the way, the truth and the life.”

—14:16-17, “[The Father] will give you another Helper … the Spirit.”

—14:28, “I am going away and coming back to you.”

—15:5, “I am the vine, you are the branches.”

—15:18, “If the world hates you … it hated me before it hated you.”

—16:20, “You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will be turned into joy.”

—16:24, “Ask, and you will receive that your joy may be full.”

—16:32, “You will be scattered, each to his own, and will leave Me alone. And yet I am not alone.”

—II. Verse 1b, “He went out with His disciples [from the Upper Room] over the Brook Kidron where there was a garden.”
