On-Site in Israel:

—Another one of my favorite spots to visit in Israel is Jericho. You can’t overstate the importance of Jericho in biblical history for the people of Israel. It was the first site they took during their conquest of Canaan, according to God’s promise. As you know God parted the waters of the Jordan River so His people could cross over, and God took down the defensive walls of Jericho.  

—When you visit Jericho today, a keen archaeological eye can look around and realize that what happened there is only explainable by how the Bible states it. You can dig anywhere with your own bare hands in the hill of Jericho, and you will find pottery shards and ancient bricks. When there are any digs—and there aren’t many digs in Jericho these days, although there have been a few major ones—whenever they have dug, it’s been easy to find big jars of scorched barley. That’s because before the conquest, the people of Jericho took all their crops into the city to try to withstand the siege that they expected to happen.

Any military expert would know that you had better take the spoils and the food to feed your own army before moving on to the next target. But, of course, you know that Israel didn’t take all the stuff. They burnt the city. They destroyed it just as God told them to do. Also, when you walk around the collapsed walls of the city, you’ll see that they all fell outwards, and you can see the Canaanitic mud bricks.

What you’ll find in Jericho lines up exactly with how the Bible describes the beginning of the conquest. There’s no other way to explain it by logic. It can’t be explained by what people would logically do in a military campaign or by an earthquake or by anything like that. No other explanation comes close to what you see with your own two eyes, for it lines up with the Bible.

—On my first trip to Jericho, we ate at a restaurant before touring the biblical site. A friendly, gregarious, Palestinian man came and welcomed us, and he gave us some free, cool beverages because it was hot out. He was very friendly and he would joke with us, telling us that he’s the king of Jericho. We found out later that he was the mayor of the modern city of Jericho, so I actually conversed with the mayor of Jericho.

—On my second trip, I was at Jericho with a group from my church, and our senior pastor was with us. We were climbing up a hill, going up into the city. God knocked down the walls of Jericho, destroying them in such a way that as they fell they provided a convenient ramp-like structure for the people of ancient Israel to charge up and into the city.

You can walk up the hill of Jericho today, literally on the same Canaanitic bricks that Joshua and the Israelites climbed up on, though today they are, of course, a lot more brittle. Now around 3,500 years later, we were walking up a hillside, and my pastor’s foot slipped a little bit. He slid down a couple feet, destroying several of the bricks. He felt really bad, but I told him, “Pastor, it’s okay!  God wanted these destroyed. You’re carrying on God’s will, right? You’re part of the destruction of Jericho, you know.”

—So that’s how I tried to comfort him.

Week Twenty-Eight, 2024

The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. The righteous person may have many troubles, but the Lord delivers him from them all. He protects all his bones, not one of them will be broken (Psalms 34:18).

In my younger years, scouting was very much a part of my life, and I attained the rank of Eagle. Our troop was a great one and all of the leaders were veterans of World War II, so they ran the troop like they ran the military. I never understood why, but we always closed every troop meeting with the singing of Taps.

Later in life, as I developed spiritually, I drew the spiritual attachment. Taps closed the day that was done as the sun set below the horizon. It was the end of the day and celebrated that all was well. It is often played at burials signifying the end of a life. The final bugle call of the day on military installations, Taps is played at military bases as a signal to service members that it is quiet time for “lights out”.

Day is done, gone the sun,

From the hills, from the lake, from the skies.

All is well, safely rest, God is nigh.

The key to me is “God is nigh.” This is a reminder that God is close to those who place their hope and trust in His promises. God’s word is Truth and He cannot lie so if we take Him at His word He will hear our cries for help and respond as He draws near to us because of His great love for us. Nigh is an old-fashioned word that can be used as an adjective or adverb to mean near.

James 4:8 tells us to draw nigh to God, and He will draw nigh to you. James promised that when we resist Satan, he will leave. In verse 8, James calls us to draw near—to move closer—to God. This comes with an additional promise: God will respond by moving closer to us. That’s an incredible act of mercy on God’s part.

What was causing fights and quarrels among the Christians to whom James was writing? They were living by the world’s wisdom. This false perspective says human beings should do whatever it takes to get what they want in this life, even if it hurts other people. James says that to live that way is adultery, but God gives grace. Christians should repent and move close to God again. We should trust Him to provide, to be the Judge, and to lift us up in His time. In humility, we must acknowledge that all of our plans are dependent on Him, and He can change them at any moment.

So, the message of taps is to make sure when the day is done, as we pillow our head and cover ourselves with the cover of God, all is well because God is nigh.

SOMETIMES TRUE STORIES

“Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace.” (Romans 8:5-6 NIV).

In this passage in Romans, Paul describes the classic battle between the flesh and the Spirit. Really asking the following:

“On what is your mind set? On what are you focused on? Satisfying your own flesh desires or what the Holy Spirit desires?”

Our families are growing up in a society that has already been through the “ME” generation and the X and Y Generation that, while doing some good things, saw the deterioration and graying of moral values. Through those generations, it became all about ME. Satisfying my own desires first and foremost. With little regard to the needs or feelings of others.

That’s why I like such movements as the “I Am Second” movement. The movement that has famous actors, athletes, CEOs sharing why they are second and God is first. These kinds of things send a great reminder of who we are supposed to be as followers of Jesus. As a Believer… that is, as a follower of Jesus, I need to evaluate my heart and my mindset on a daily (if not hourly) basis.

Am I being ruled by the flesh and my fleshly desires?

Am I allowing the world (or even the world around me) to form my thoughts, actions and opinions?

Am I allowing the flesh to rule my desires? Or am I being formed and shaped by the Holy Spirit living within me? Allowing the Spirit’s desire for life and peace to rule me?

Allowing my decisions, choices, actions and thoughts to be directed by the Spirit within me? It’s a classic battle that wages within us all – The Flesh vs The Spirit.

Which will you be governed by? On what is your mind set?

Sixty years ago I was driven to Marine Corps boot camp. The bus arrived at 1am. Our heads were shaved. We were sent to the showers and shaved our faces, some bloodied. Then to bed. At 5am we awoke to the loud clashing of garbage cans. For the next 12 weeks, I learned a vocabulary I never knew existed. I heard myself described in ways that couldn’t be me.

Fast forward to the 21st century. The vocabulary from boot camp now seems to be the norm. People can’t communicate with one another without including some invective about that person or topic. Today’s language seems to be void of cordial substance and teeming with negative emotions.

Let’s get back to civil discourse, even when we disagree. God gives us, especially followers of Christ, the ability to choose kindness over rudeness. Think how nice it would be to return to those times prior to my boot camp.

IS IT SAFE TO VISIT ISRAEL?

—Recently I spoke with a man for the very first time who was inquiring about a trip to Israel, and during our conversation he asked me if it’s safe to travel there. For good reason this is a topic that has come up repeatedly in my conversations with those contemplating a trip, even before the war. Well, there’s good news! After extensive, security-risk assessments many airlines have already resumed flights to Israel this year, and many more have plans to do so within the next couple of months. The airlines have concluded that it’s safe, though, of course, no one can guarantee your complete safety. Even so, here are the things I’ve been telling folks for years about Israel.

—First, Israel is a modern country with a highly-visible security presence. In the area of Jerusalem, for example, where we spend the majority of our time, there is very little street crime. Granted we do visit some areas where pickpocketers roam, but I alert our group members in advance, and members of the local police force are predictably stationed in high volume areas to protect tourists. It’s also quite common to find yourself standing behind an armed soldier or two of the Israel Defense Force in line at McDonald’s or at a coffee shop just living life, which personally makes me feel very safe.

—Second, though political agendas, religions and ethnicities differ widely across Israel, they all have one thing in common. They want to sell you something to feed their family, making them rather welcoming to tourists (though sometimes a bit annoying) no matter where you travel.

—Third, as I often say, there are likely places in your own hometown that you avoid after dark. Obviously, Israel has those places as well, so we just don’t go there.

—Fourth, I had a missionary once tell me that you’d be safer in the middle of a civil war in his country inside the will of God than at home on your couch outside the will of God. The same is true for Israel. If you believe that God has called you to go, then go. He holds you in his hands!

—Lastly, I always ask group members upon their return home if they ever felt unsafe while in Israel, and people have always said that they felt perfectly safe.

Week Twenty-Seven, 2024

For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery. Galatians 5:1

It was several decades ago, but I was shocked and remember it as though it happened yesterday. Three of us were on our way to do missionary work behind the Iron Curtain. We stopped along the way in Yugoslavia to visit a pastor and stay in his home. The cab dropped us off at his doorstep and we proceeded inside. Shortly there was a knock at the door, and it was the police. The pastor was told that he couldn’t have guests in his home, and we were ordered out onto the street.

As I sat on my suitcase on the sidewalk trying to decide where to go, I pondered what had just happened. That would never happen in America, the land of the free. Suddenly, my chest swelled, and I had a feeling of immense pride. I was an American and so proud of it.

This week, we celebrate the drafting and ratification of the Declaration of Independence. I have stood before the original in the National Archives in Washington. The fifty-six delegates who signed the Declaration of Independence came to be known as the nation’s Founding Fathers, and the Declaration has become one of the most circulated, reprinted, and influential documents in world history. Most of those men ultimately gave their lives and property for the cause of freedom.

The Declaration of Independence has proven an influential and globally impactful statement on human rights, particularly its second sentence: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

We are endowed by our creator, almighty God. The grace of God reaches the worst of people and there is more mercy in Christ than there is sin in me. There are many nations, but only one God. Much diversity but one God. 1. There are many nations, but there’s only one God, and He is Lord over all. That is where we are endowed with our freedom.

We are Americans, but our citizenship is in heaven, from which we eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. Philippians 3:20.

So the celebration of the 4th of July is not about fun and fireworks, rather it is a time we celebrate who we are and whose we are and who endowed us with the freedoms we enjoy as Americans.

Every Fourth of July, I think of that day sitting on the streets, evicted and in a dark country where freedoms were unknown and I celebrate that I am an American. I love my country and I love the God who endowed our freedom.

I am ever so thankful, to be living here today because the flag still stands for freedom, and they can’t take that away. I’m proud to be an American where at least I know I’m free and I won’t forget the men who died and gave that right to me and I’d gladly stand and defend Her still today. There’s not a doubt I love this land. God Bless the U.S.A.

SOMETIMES TRUE STORIES

Years ago, there was a movie called “Courageous”. One of the men, who was a main character, was up for a promotion to manager along with several others. They were called in for interviews and told that they would have to falsify invoices to protect senior management as a condition of the promotion.

Because he was a new Christian, he was conflicted as to what to do. The promotion would greatly benefit his family, but the condition went against his beliefs. The next day he told them that he wouldn’t cheat to get the position. Since he was the only one to demonstrate such honesty, they made him the manager.

As believers, we are expected to walk following the tenets of our faith. Sometimes, as with the man mentioned, we are rewarded for our honesty. But sometimes we may not be. However, the outcome should not be the determiner of our actions.

Whether rewarded in this life or not, when we face our Savior, Jesus Christ, we want to hear, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” That’s the reward which is greater than any we could receive now.

Series: Walking around Jerusalem

—Our walk around Jerusalem is now complete as we stand before what is arguably the most photographed gate in the world and without doubt the oldest gate in the Old City’s walls. In 1999 our tour group was able to get within a few feet of this double gate from the outside. Although protected by a small iron fence, some of our group members nevertheless jumped the fence so that they could touch the gate, but these days you can’t get anywhere near it. Also called the Golden Gate (this is a story for another day) or the Gate of Mercy (the southern gate) and Repentance (the northern gate), it was built approximately seven hundred years after the time of Jesus directly over the remains of an earlier gate used to enter the temple courtyard. 

—Jews believe that one day the Messiah will enter through this gate to redeem them. Christians accept Jesus as the Messiah, and many believe that it was through this very gate that he entered on Palm Sunday and that he will reenter at his second coming. Muslims believe that the final resurrection and judgment will take place here, and so this gate holds enormous significance for all three faiths.

—The gate was sealed by the Arabs in 810 A.D. to deny unsupervised access to the Temple Mount to unbelievers although the gate was unblocked during the Crusader period each year for the celebrations of Palm Sunday and the Exaltation of the Cross. At the close of the Crusader period in the late twelfth century the gate no longer served any religious or practical purpose and it has remained closed to this day.

Week Twenty-Six, 2024

It also forced all people, great and small, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hands or on their foreheads, so that they could not buy or sell unless they had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of its name (Rev 13:16-17).

The retail giant, Amazon, has recently introduced a new method of shopping. Right in the comfort of your own home, you can take a picture of your hand and upload it. Then when you want to shop you submit a picture of your hand and it is matched, much like fingerprints.

Already one food chain has eliminated any cash transactions. You have to use a credit card and they are introducing the palm print method so credit cards can be phased out. This is scary. When universally adopted in the move to a cashless society, whoever controls the system can control your access to things you want to buy…. necessities like food, gad and medical help.

Many are now promoting universal “chipping”, like we do for our dogs as mandatory for all newly born babies. They cite many good reasons, like identity, medical information and the list goes on. However, the big negative is that whoever controls the system can control you.

Many American corporations are now requiring a “company chip” to be inserted as a condition of employment. The chip is as small as a grain of rice and can be inserted on less than thirty seconds between the thumb and index finger.

Revelation speaks about the “mark of the beast” and the consequences.: It also forced all people, great and small, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hands or on their foreheads, so that they could not buy or sell unless they had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of its name (Rev 13:16-17).

Think about it. With this modern technology, lives can be controlled and wars can be won or lost. Forget the nuclear and write it off as old fashioned. Wars will be controlled at the computer at “Chip Central”.

Is Revelation coming or is it already here? Beware, I think it is here and growing by leaps and bounds. Are you prepared to respond as “chipping” becomes a requirement to shop or work.

SOMETIMES TRUE STORIES

Reaching your goals and dreams takes more than just doing what is expected of you, as good and as hard as that may be. Exceeding your goals and dreams is about doing what is expected and then some.

It’s about taking personal responsibility for it.

It’s about owning it.

It’s about more than just dreaming Big Dreams.

It’s about dedicating yourself to doing exceedingly more than what is expected.

It’s about striving to reach and exceed those Big Dreams.

A statue of Rev. Billy Graham was recently unveiled in the US Capitol. The likeness depicts Dr. Graham gesturing toward an open Bible in his hand. Its base is inscribed with two verses of Scripture:

• “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16).

• “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me” (John 14:6).

Visitors to our nation’s capital will therefore encounter the gospel every time they see Dr. Graham’s statue. This is consistent with the evangelist’s statement during his final sermon in June 2005 at Flushing Meadows Corona Park in New York:

I have one message—that Jesus Christ came, he died on a cross, he rose again, and he asked us to repent of our sins and receive him by faith as Lord and Savior, and if we do, we have forgiveness of all our sins.

When you venture out into the world, you may well find yourself in a job or a community or a social setting when you will be pressured to endorse ideas you don’t believe or to abandon core beliefs. It will be up to you to stand firm.

Does America need this “one message” more now than ever?

Week Twenty-Five, 2024

The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and terrible day of the Lord come (Joel 2:31).

It was a dark, very dark, night and we were deep in the woods in South Africa, where there were no lights other than a bright moon. At the predicted time, with a flashlight in hand, we ventured out on to a grass runway and laid down on our backs. Slowly, as if a shade was being pulled down, the black pulled across the moon, until its bright light was totally obliterated. We could not see our hands in front of our faces. It was a total eclipse of the moon. It was the hand of God.

What is significant about these events is that they were scheduled and predicted many years ago. For example, the next solar eclipse in America will be on August 23, 2044. These phenomena illustrated how ordered our universe is. It could have only been created and orchestrated by an intelligent designer.

Recently, there was an eclipse of the sun in the mid-afternoon. It spread across North America. At some places, it was totally dark. Things that happen at dark happened, like animals baying their good night calls.

What did the Bible say about the eclipse? Isaiah 13:10: “The stars of heaven and their constellations will not show their light. The rising sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light.” Ezekiel 32:7: “When I extinguish you, I will cover the heavens and darken their stars; I will cover the sun with a cloud, and the moon will not give its light.”

A full solar eclipse is not just a spectacle to witness; it is a profound opportunity for inner growth and transformation. It is God in action. For those who plan to be around in 2044, put August 23 on your calendar. The eclipse is going to happen because God’s plan says it will!!

The late Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant was one of the best players in professional basketball. His workout regiment was legendry and his dedication to the fundamentals of the sport was uncompromising.

The story is told that Nike sent Alan Stein, Jr to witness one of Bryant’s workouts. When he arrived at 4:00 am, Kobe was already dripping with sweat with a warmup before the workout. For the next 45 minutes, Stein watch Bryant work on basic basketball drills.

Later Stein, who admitted he became bored just watching Bryant’s routine, asked the star of 5 championship teams and many individual awards, why he spent so much time on simple, basic drills? Kobe’s response was golden.

We must, like Joseph, plan for what to do when Satan tempts us to sin. We need to be so full of God’s Word that we don’t hesitate to reject Satan’s temptations. When faced with sin, flee. Hebrews 11:23-40

June 8, 2024

—I don’t believe there’s a better summary of the men and women of this chapter than the one I stumbled across in v. 38 where the writer of Hebrews, almost with a sigh, says of them, “Of whom this world was not worthy.” In the first half of chapter 11 the writer of Hebrews summarizes the faith of Abel, Enoch, Noah and more, but I’ll be examining the names listed in the second half of the chapter. 

—The parade of names given in Hebrews 11 prompts me to remember the names of so many others that you likely never knew “of whom this world was not worthy,” such as Russ, Debbie, David, Karon, Bill and Marion. Faceless to most, but especially dear to me. No doubt you have your own list of names that could be added to this Hall of Faith in Hebrews 11. We grow in faith by watching those who have walked this earth before us with such grace and victory despite their manifold hardships and challenges. Thank God for them. In this last half of Hebrews 11 we’ll meet even more of them. Some will be named specifically, like Moses, but many will pass quietly before us either unnamed or unknown. 

—Let me share seven faith lessons from the lives of these great men and women of faith of whom this world was not worthy.

—Faith Lesson #1 (v. 23)

—When your nation’s laws and God’s commands conflict, don’t be afraid to disobey the authority of man. Amram and Jochabed, full knowing that pharaoh had ordered the death of all newborn, Hebrew boys, refused to comply and hid baby Moses. Don’t think this couldn’t happen today? It already has in China, for example, where those who had more than one child were for years fined, dismissed from their government jobs or even forced into abortions. What would you have done if God blessed you with a child that you were not permitted to birth or raise?

—Faith Lesson #2 (vs. 24-26)

—Your identity as a child of God is far more rewarding than any privileges this life can offer. Moses traded sinful pleasures to suffer with God’s people, and he traded extraordinary wealth to be mocked alongside them. Why? Because he knew there was great reward from God in doing so (v. 26). In Matthew 5:11 Jesus himself promised blessing for those who are reviled and persecuted for standing with him. Are you enjoying certain privileges that are weakening your faith? Let them go and know God’s reward.

—Faith Lesson #3 (v. 27)

—Don’t fear the heavy hand of your nation if it targets your faith, but look to your unseen God for the endurance you need for any decisions that God has called you to make. Moses knew that to side with slaves and to demand their release would unleash pharaoh’s anger, but he kept his eyes on the Lord. This episode in Moses’ life likewise encourages us to walk by faith and not by sight. God sees us even if we struggle to see him.

Week Twenty-Four, 2024

So, God created the great creatures of the sea and every living thing with which the water teems and that moves about in it, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good (Genesis 1:21).

We live on an incredible earth, all created by an intelligent designer in just a week. There are various creatures and topography, and it all works together as designed. There are blistering deserts and frozen glaciers. I have been to both and everywhere in between. Each of the seven continents is unique and populated by living creatures that are designed to live there and co-exist with others.

Recently, we spent a week in Botswana, deep in the tundra. As we traveled daily across the Mashatu, we saw animals, big and small, all designed to exist together.

The giraffes eat the treetops to allow the sun to penetrate to the earth, where is feeds the growing plants that provide a foot source for smaller vegetarians. The elephants eat all day and only digest forty percent of what they eat, so as they walk, they re-seed to replace the plants that they eat.

The lions are carnivorous, and they always win, as they capture the zebras and impalas for meat. But they don’t eat it all, leaving some for other animals who can’t capture their prey. Once the bones are clean, the hyenas, having the strongest jaws, chew the bones and make a paste, which they deposit on the ground for the birds to eat and get the calcium for their eggshells. When it is all over, the vultures wipe it all clean. The cycle is repeated over and over again, as He made all capable of recreating themselves, by the union of male and female. And they haven’t changed since God first created them.

And the list goes on. God made every kind of wild animal, every kind of tame animal, and every kind of thing that crawls on the ground. God saw that it was good. (Gen 1:25) And then He made man, the most complex creature of all. Features of living organisms such as the locomotive organs, internal organs like the heart and the kidneys, the sense organs, the ability to react on external stimuli, the social behavior, the understanding of symbols, the use of language, and the intelligence are examples of features displaying man’s complexity.

Adam and Eve were the first human beings created. God spent six days creating all the different elements of the universe and created Adam on the final day before he rested.

The Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and He breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. God then called the man Adam, and later created Eve from Adam’s rib. And they haven’t changed since God first created them.

Our God is an awesome God!

There was a television show called Extreme Makeover which ran from 2003 to 2007. The premise was that a woman who was thought to be less attractive than she could be, by so-called societal norms, was treated with plastic surgery, weight loss, hair and makeup, clothing and more as needed. They would trumpet the before and after pictures and think it was a life changing event.

But was it? They could change what a person looks like on the outside, but they couldn’t change one’s real person on the inside. Too often, we look at people the same way. We form our opinions of them by the outside, when it’s the inside that matters.

God doesn’t do that. He looks at our character on the inside and determines if that needs a makeover. And since it so often does, He provides the means. All we have to do is place our trust in Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit of God comes alive in us and creates a true-life changing event.

Jesus commanded, “Take, eat … Do this in remembrance of me.” But most of us have participated in the Lord’s Supper so often that we’re in danger of forgetting its significance, of simply going through the motions, and behaving like the Corinthians Paul rebuked.

The Apostle Paul gives us two reasons why we must take our Lord’s command very seriously:

First, by sharing communion, you testify to the world that you worship the crucified, resurrected and soon to return Christ. Our Lord’s Cross divides all time, history, and humanity. He died in your place! Paul sums it up:

For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death till He comes.

I Corinthians 11:26

I’m pretty certain that the bread is not symbolized by a donut, nor the blood by a cup of coffee.

Second, Paul shows us the other side of the coin, warning us:

Therefore whoever eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.

I Corinthians 11:27

Paul then tells us what can happen to you if you are guilty of the body and blood of Christ:

For this reason many are weak and sick among you, and many sleep.

I Corinthians 11:30

Wait! Are all Christianswho become sick guilty of sin? Of course not. Paul said, “many are!”AndJesus had already clarified the issue, in John chapter 9:

Now as Jesus passed by, He saw a man who was blind from birth. And His disciples asked Him, saying, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” Jesus answered, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but that the works of God should be revealed in him.”

John 9:1-3

How should we prepare for communion? Paul tells us:

But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For he who eats and drinks in an unworthy manner eats and drinks judgment to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body.

Corinthians 11:28-29

I don’t mean to darken this glorious morning by threatening anyone. We are celebrating our Lord in this new shelter that he’s provided. Paul gave you the solution to your problem: He said, examine yourself! That is, identify, sorrow over, confess and turn from your sins.

This morning is a defining moment, an instant when your flesh will again war with your spirit, demanding that you hold back and not yield everything to Christ.

But, dear friends, right now you can make sure you have a clean slate. If you haven’t received Jesus, ask him to to be your Savior, and give your life to him. If you have, then search your heart, repent, confess, start fresh!

When Jesus shared the Passover meal with his disciples, he hadn’t yet been crucified, he hadn’t risen from the dead, nor had he, 40 days later, ascended into heaven.

At this last supper, Jesuscommanded:

“TAKE, EAT; this is My body which is broken for you!”

Corinthians 11:24

Now, on a happier note, let me point out some wonderful promises of which you may not be aware. A thousand years earlier, King David uttered a similar invitation:

OH, TASTE and see that the LORD is good;How blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him!”

Psalm 34:8

Many of you have “tasted” and seen that the Lord is good. The 34th Psalm describes the results of King David’s tasting the Lord. In verse 4, David states:

“I sought the LORD, and He answered me;

He delivered me from all my fears.

In verse 5: “Those who look to Him are radiant with joy; their faces shall never be ashamed.

Verse 6: “This poor man called out, andthe LORD heard him; He saved him from all his troubles.

7 “The angel of the LORD encampsaround those who fear Him, and he delivers them.

Verse 9 “Fear the LORD, you His saints, forthose who fear Him lack nothing.

Verse 10 “Young lions go lacking and hungry,

but those who seek the LORD lack no good thing.”

You must taste of the Lord before you can experience his blessings, and to taste, you must come in innocence and trust. The Apostle Peter, too, implies that you may not have tasted:

…as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby, if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious.”

1 Peter 2:2-3.

We are tempted to enjoy the benefits without bearing the responsibilities. God asks us to walk worthy, and he provides the means. Before you take of the bread and the cup today, don’t risk doing so unworthily. Put every fault you can think of under a magnifying glass, and take it to God.

Wednesday night, I came under the conviction of the Holy Spirit, when I realized I’d begun judging those with whom I had been laboring shoulder to shoulder as we prepared this building to shelter our fellowship. Those folks are the very best! Over the past few months, they have literally shed blood, sweat, and tears, even risking their health.

It’s been a time of stress when old, dear, and trusted friendshave have been in danger of breakingone another’s hearts by saying things they shouldn’t.

Remember the old saying, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” That’s not true. Words can do awful damage, and slander and gossip are grievous sins! Mark those who practice them, and avoid them.

Sure, we all grow exhausted and short-tempered, but that’s no excuse. In fact, it’sa great testing ground for God to measure our self-control and humility. Criticisms may have been made, often by those who contributed little or nothing to the work. Did people make mistakes? Sure! Dare we judge them? Absolutely not!

We have too few godly friends, and we get enough criticism from Satan. Name calling is one evil;manipulating people to gain favor or power is wicked, and God hates such behavior! Don’t help our very capable enemydamageour fellowship.

Is there any volunteer here that did not spill some paint, spread sawdust on the carpet, or damage something during our labors? I know that I did! I bear in my body the marks of a careless painter. Remember Isaiah’s words (Take off your coat!):

“Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow.”

Isaiah 1:18

This building is just a pile of sticks and stones. It’ll pass away, but God’s Word will not pass away. The Lord provided this structure for us to build one another up. It must not be the cause of division. Look around! Everything worked out. Someday this place will be forgotten just as quickly as the building we occupiedlast Sunday.

In his letter to the Romans, Paul warned:

Therefore you are inexcusable, O man, whoever you are who judge, for in whatever you judge another you condemn yourself; for you who judge practice the same things.

Romans 2:1

Jesus said:

“For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

Matthew 6:14-15

As we pray, search your heart to make certain you haven’t any unconfessed sin in your life, and aren’t about to eat and drink unworthily. Make your confession.

Then, “Taste and see that the Lord is good!”
