LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT

Week Twenty-Six, 2021

Your testimonies are my heritage forever, for they are the joy of my heart. Psalm 119:111

I am a lawyer. I write wills. I have written hundreds of them. People come to me concerned about how to leave whatever they have, to whoever they want after they die. But there is more.

The will part names what you have and to whom you want it to go. I have written many I do not agree with, but I am the agent that can help people do stupid things. The testament part is statement that allows the testator to leave a testament for those who will come behind.

Peter Grant lived in Berwick, Maine. He was a Scottish exile who was captured and brought to America in the 1600’s. He was a great grandfather to me. In doing some ancestry research, I came a across his will and what a will it was. He gave glory to God and praise to almighty God. He said he didn’t have much in the way of goods and property to leave, but he did have his faith in God to leave to all that would come after him. That’s me and his faith in God is my inheritance.

My wife and I have a will and it includes our Christian testimony. When we die, it will be a public record and some day our descendants, most of whom will not know or care that we existed might be interested in their family history and read our will and testament and know that they too are recipients of Peter Grant’s and our Christian faith.

As Christians, we are called to testify as to our faith. Jesus last words are found in Matthew 28:19-20…. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.

In Jesus’ time, mobility was limited. Often people rarely went more than five or so miles away during their entire life. But today, we are much more mobile and think nothing of it. I have probably crossed the Atlantic and Pacific fifty or more times. A few weeks ago, I had breakfast in Maine, lunch in Michigan and dinner in Florida. I saw hundreds of people, but I am sad to say that to not one did I share my faith in Christ. I missed opportunities to testify to my faith. Bad me!

One way to testify as to our faith is to speak and explain it. Our testimony for Jesus in should be a lifestyle and words that openly acknowledge our personal experience of following Jesus Christ.. We testify by our words and actions. If our lives are a testimony for Jesus Christ, then they should be reflections of Christ as we follow in his steps.

Does the way you live your life testify for Jesus?
