The Joy of Jogging

With bandage from melanoma surgery still on arm, Joy finishes 10K run.

In April, 1988, Joy Becker was diagnosed with malignant melanoma. She refused the Interferon, was “fired” by her doctor, and instead relied on the Lord to heal her through prayer, diet, and exercise.

While she still wore the bandage on her arm from the melanoma surgery, she ran her first 10 kilometer fun run. A short time later, she ran the 22+ mile San Diego Marathon. During the marathon, she was knocked down when a man illegally crossed Route 5, The Ocean Highway, right in front of her. He hit her with his surf board, knocking her down, and leaving her bruised and abraded. But she completed the run, finishing 5th in her age group. Since then, she was again diagnosed with melanoma, but thank God, he spared her.

Joy has been involved in many ministries through the years, from serving as a weekday Christian radio commentator (“Reflections”) to being a Christian educator, and always a faithful witness and soul-winner. Until the pandemic precluded her participation, she ministered as a pregnancy counselor at a local center, and continues to email people around the world with the message of Christ’s salvation.
