READ the WORD

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. John 1:1

How to Read a Book is a book by Mortimer Adler, written in 1940, which gives guidelines for critically reading good and great books of any tradition. Adler explains why he was compelled to write the book. He asserts that very few people can read a book for understanding, but he believes that most are capable of it, given the right instruction and the will to do so.

It is his intent to provide that instruction. He takes time to tell the reader about how he believes that the educational system has failed to teach students the art of reading well, up to and including undergraduate, university-level institutions. He concludes due to these shortcomings in formal education, it falls upon individuals to cultivate these abilities in themselves. It is a classical guide to intelligent reading.

I thought about this applies to Bible reading. One in five Americans – 20% – read the Bible at all, and 39% – a little more than a third – of Christians read the Bible regularly. The number one indicator of spiritual growth is a habit of daily Bible reading. No one else can read the Bible for you and create spiritual growth in your life. A choice to read your Bible daily will do more than just about anything else to create the conditions for spiritual growth in your life.

Not only do you need to have the will, but, you need instruction to know how. Bombard the text with questions and look for answers and seek to integrate the parts and put them together. Seek the Holy Spirit to guide you. The natural person cannot understand, but the spiritual man understands and praises all things.

Ponce de Leon was looking for the fountain of youth, but the Bible provides a fountain of life. When we spend time in the Bible it becomes our joy, because the Bible meets the challenges of life in a Biblical way. It has been said that the Bible is so deep that theologians cannot touch the bottom, yet so shallow that babies in faith cannot drown. We need to come to the Word of God by the person who wrote it.

We have to have the will to read and the knowledge and know how to do it. If enough Christians made that choice, think about the impact that could have on the church. If you are concerned about the direction of our country, the spiritual atmosphere of your home, your ability to influence your kids … then start with your own habit of Bible reading. That’s the 5% you control, that no one else can. And this habit is a game-changer.

“WE HAVE NO KING BUT ME”

“We Have No King But Me” (Matthew 21:1-11)

Delivered Palm Sunday March 25, 2018

TODAY’S “SPECIAL”: “A Palm Funny”

It was Palm Sunday but because of a sore throat, 5-year-old Johnny stayed home from church with a sitter.
When the family returned home, they were carrying several palm leaves. Johnny asked them what they were for.
“People held them over Jesus’ head as he walked by,” his father told him.
“Wouldn’t you know it,” Johnny fumed, “the one Sunday I don’t go and Jesus shows up.”

INTRODUCTION

I am so glad that, as a minister of the Word of God, I have God’s full assurance that every time I open up this book before you, He shows up! And I know that He has promised, in Isaiah 55, that when His Word is read or heard, it will accomplish some profound eternal purpose – both in the one proclaiming His Word, and in the ones reading or hearing His Word. Wow! So as we meet together, I have the full assurance from God that He is meeting with us – and He wants to do a work in each of our hearts. What work? Well, perhaps you in your journey of faith have never trusted the Lord Jesus as Savior. You’ve trusted the Church, the pastor, the nice people in the church – but have you ever trusted the Savior as your Savior? That’s a good purpose. And as we look at our text today, I’m trusting God to encourage all of us to see Palm Sunday in a fresh light – and when we do, we will have our hunger met in a hurry – that He be the King of all of our lives! There – now that you know what is coming, you can go back to sleep!
PRAYER

#1 THE PRESENTATION OF JESUS AS KING (Matt. 21:9-11)

A. Promotes instant obedience (and, no doubt, marvel) (vs. 1ff)
Isn’t it an amazing thing that there are several moments of instant obedience in this passage? First of all, the ones who were asked to go get the donkey and colt. They could have said, “WHAT? Who are You kidding? Nobody in their right mind gives up personal property like that!” But they had unquestioned obedience. Then how about the owner of that donkey and colt? He willingly gave them to the one who said, “the Lord has need of them”. Oh that we were so quick to obey the promptings of the Lord in our lives!

B. “Your King comes to you, Zion” (v. 5)
Jesus is offered as King to Israel – but just days later, they reject His Kingship, His Lordship. Ephesians & Romans say that then Israel is set aside so that His Kingship can be offered to the Gentles in the church age. Those Jews who trust Him as Savior are now Christians and part of the church!
Rev. 19:11-16 records He will one day rule as King of kings!
But until then, the last words spoken about the Messiah’s relationship with Israel is found in John 1:11, “He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him.” He offered Himself to them as their King, and they rejected His offer.

#2 THE HISTORY OF THE REJECTED KING

A. Matt. 2:1-3 the occasion of Jesus’ birth
Herod: there is no king but ME
Magi: there is no King but Jesus, and we worship Him!
B. Matt. 5:35 Jerusalem is the city of the Great King (Jesus)
C. Matt. 18:23ff The rejected King is a king of mercy
D. John 18:33,37,39 The rejected King is the King of Truth
E. John 19:3,12,14,15,19,21
The rejected King is in charge (19:11)
The accepted king of the day nurtures faith in oneself with no need of the true King (19:15)
The rejected King’s title is settled, as is His Word (19:21-22)

CONCLUSION

The cry of Palm Sunday is two-fold. Can you hear both cries? The first cry is: “Your King comes for you.” While that kingship was offered to Israel, it is also offered to us.But that kingship can be rejected – just as the crowd yelled “we have no king but Caesar”, so we yell, “we have no king but ME – what do we need a King for? We do just fine without Him.”
So in your journey of faith, where are you? Are you with the crowd at Calvary yelling, “we have no king but ME”?
OR are you with the group on Palm Sunday, and listening, hearkening to the cry, “your King comes for you.”?
It is written of the Lord Jesus, following the declaration of His being rejected by His people Israel, “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name.” (John 1:12)

Teach Me to Pray” Series – Part 3, March 18, 2018

TODAY’S “SPECIAL”: “Dad’s Car”

A young man comes home and says, “Dad, just got my driver’s license and would like to use the family car.”

Father replies, “OK, son. But FIRST, you have to get good grades in school, keep your room clean, make sure the yard is neat, and cut your hair. Come back in a few months and then we’ll see.”

Well, several months pass and the young man comes into the house with his report card in his hands. “DAD, I got great marks on my report card. I’ve been keeping my room as neat as a pin, and the yard is always ship-shape. How about letting me use the car?”

Father replies, “That’s all true, but son you didn’t cut your hair.”

Son says, “But dad, JESUS had long hair.”

Father replies, “Yes, son, you’re perfectly right. And He walked everywhere He went.”

INTRODUCTION

Palm Sunday next Sunday, and Easter is April 1st. To prepare our hearts for these special days, I have initiated a season of prayer every Thursday at 7 pm throughout this month.

I really hope you can come – or take an evening a week to pray at home.

But how do I pray? Today is the last Sunday we are looking at a most familiar piece of Scripture where the Lord Jesus teaches His disciples how to pray. LAST WEEK: “Keep the THY before the MY”. TODAY, a follow-up:: “Keep the MY after the THY”. (I worked really hard on those titles!) PRAYER

#1 LET’S REVIEW!

A. A fresh relationship – “our Father in Heaven” Jesus is opening a new avenue of prayer, not only for His immediate disciples, but for all future ones as well (including us!). This is an expression which is tender – “OUR” Father. Jesus is including His children under the umbrella of sharing His tender relationship with His Father, with those who love Him as well!

B. A tender reminder – “hallowed be Thy name” Jesus is reminding His disciples that the characteristic of His Father which governs all others is His holiness. We are invited to come to Jesus as we are – and when we do, we are reminded that the One to Whom we are coming is in Himself holy.

C. A fixed resolve – “Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done”. There is no “Jeremy’s kingdom” or “FBC kingdom.” All is focused on “THY” kingdom. Doesn’t that relieve a lot of stress is trying to build up YOUR kingdom? AND it relieves the stress on the church, for Jesus said “I will build MY church”. FBC is not OUR church, it is JESUS’ church – and He will build it up as we do those things and be those people that He so enjoys! And the Father’s will? It is found both by prayer AND in agreement with His written Word. He does NOTHING apart from His Word. Should that not encourage us to be children of the Book? I hope you are! NOTE: the “THY” before the “MY”

#2 LET’S BE SPECIFIC!

Jesus introduces the second section of this prayer by a change in personal pronouns. In the beloved KJV, “THY” is the word of choice of the first section. And the second section the word of choice is “MY” (or “OUR”). In order for the second part to be effective, it must come AFTER the first part. PLEASE KEEP THE “MY” AFTER THE “THY”!

A. Our daily bread (v. 11)

Two emphases here:

First, DAILY – unlike a budget, God wants our focus to be on TODAY!

ILLUSTRATION: A prayer we learned through Word of Life: “Good morning Lord, I love you Lord, what do you have for TODAY – let me be a part I pray.”

CF. Matt. 8:20 (and surrounding verses) – provision produces discipleship!

Second, BREAD – the center is on our need, not on our wants. What does it produce? Contentment!

B. Our debts forgiven (v. 12, 14-15)

Note 5:23ff The Lord Jesus considered relationships the heart of forgiveness!

C. Our temptation (v. 13)

I like the NIV – it is more than just evil that one is seeking deliverance from – it is the evil one, even Satan himself. Let’s keep 1 Cor. 10:13 as a base; and let’s remember Matt. 4 (referred to in Heb. 4:14-16) – the Savior confronted allurements to evil, and He met them head on, not with His Deity (as He could have) but with…Scriptures. Just like we can!

CONCLUSION

1. Review the prayer!

2. Not intended to be rote, but lived!

3. Note NIV comment on “not in original”: the NIV is based on the “Westcott & Hort” text (considered an older text), whereas the KJV & the NKJV are based on the “Textus Receptus” (a newer and more pure text). Sometimes older is NOT better. The point is: get in the Word! And pray through the Word!

Obey what we have before us! Pray what we have before us!

Philippians 4:8

How often has it happened to you?

You raced through your chores,

          or got up early,

          or simply shut the door,

          just so you could spend time with God.

It was important to you.

          You wanted to reach out and feel His presence.

          You longed for the peace of that presence.

          You had to plan and maybe fight for that time.

Now you were at last there.

But there was the threat of external intrusions, things like the telephone, kids, the doorbell, etc. “Mommy!!!” For these I have no solution to offer other than careful planning.

Maybe there were also internal intrusions, such as ideas, problems, circumstances that come to mind. A busy mind.

You wanted to focus on God, but your mind kept getting in the way. How you wished you could control that mind so you could pay attention to God.

Perhaps your ideal was described in Psalm 100. It was familiar to you. You had read it and considered it often. You had tried to make it your pattern.

Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands.

Serve the LORD with gladness: come before his presence with singing.

Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.

Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.

For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.”

“Make a joyful noise.

“Come with singing. “

“Enter His gates with thanksgiving.”

“Enter His courts with praise.”

“Be thankful unto Him.”

“Bless His name.”

Oh, if only you could!

But these thoughts keep intruding. You can’t clear your head of your problems. They won’t go away.

Here you are, on your knees, alone with God. You have thanked Him for His recent gifts. Now you want to praise Him for who He is and how He loves you. But your mind! It won’t behave itself. It is full of your needs, your problems. They flood in, one after the other. How can you take control of this unruly mind? How can you push aside these needs so you can talk to God?

Here is the secret: Don’t!

Instead, take each issue, one at a time, as it comes to your mind. Explain it to God, just as if He never heard of it before. Of course He has heard of it. He is well aware of it. But go ahead, explain it to Him anyway.

Go through all the details. Be careful to tell the whole truth too. Don’t suppress anything. If sin is involved, admit it. If there is fear, reveal it. Do not try to block out anything. Let your mind have the freedom to tell God your innermost thoughts about the matter. Even the ones you are ashamed of.

But, you may say, “I came to God to get help.” Yes, and this is how you can get it. You see, as you pour out your inner man, you will suddenly see new aspects, new factors.

Wisdom from God will seep into your understanding.

As you reveal, He will instruct.

This is not some psychological cleansing ploy. This is you carrying on a conversation with God. This is

  • You telling Him how you see your need, and

  • Him telling you how you SHOULD see your need.

This is opening the door to wisdom and revelation.

You may wonder, “What about Psalm 100?” This is part of it. “The Lord is good.” “His mercy is everlasting.” “His truth is for all generations.” His truth is for you.

How can you garner truth from God if you fail to tell Him what you are concerned about? How can He instruct you in the details if you don’t discuss the details with Him?

  • Explain yourself!

  • Enter into conversation about your needs.

  • Be ready to have your words changed as you speak them. Let God refashion them into true and righteous words.

  • Be ready to go away enlightened and refreshed.

AND—Be Alert for Prayer Nudges

They are the summons of the Holy Spirit to join in prayer.

The sudden remembrance of someone, a spiritual intrusion into one’s thought life, It is for a reason: Pray! It is the Holy Spirit asking you to join with Him.

The more often you respond, the more often He will call you.

The more often you ignore Him, the less often He will call.

Seek Him, Hear Him, Honor Him, Join Him,

“WHAT IS A SERVANT OF GOD?”

“WHAT IS A SERVANT OF GOD?”

Acts 6:1-7

TODAY’S SPECIAL: “A Super Bowl Funny”

A woman had 50 yard line tickets for the Super Bowl. As she sat down, a man came along and asked  her if anyone is sitting in the seat next to her. “No,” she said, “the seat is empty.”
“This is incredible,” said the man. “Who in their  right mind would have a seat like this for the Super Bowl, the biggest sporting event in the world, and not use it?”
Somberly, the woman  says, “Well… the seat actually belongs to me. I was supposed to come here with my husband, but he passed away. This is the first Super Bowl we have not been to together since we got married in 1967.”
“Oh I’m sorry to hear that, that’s terrible. But couldn’t you find someone else – a friend  or relative, or even a neighbor to take the seat?”
The woman shakes her head, “No, they’re all at the funeral.”

INTRODUCTION

This is an interesting question: “what is a servant of God?” And perhaps an understandable follow-up, “where does a servant of God come from?” In our text in Acts 6, the newly-formed, Spirit anointed church is at a crossroads. It has a problem, and the leadership needs help. PRAYER

A. TRUE SERVANTS ARE THE PEOPLE! (vs. 1-3a)

1. The first church recognized the work of ministry – these verses showed servants coming from..the people!
2. This is the pattern of Ephesians 4:11-13 – leadership training the people to do the work of the ministry
3. Illus. Rev. Dr. Ken Beres passed away this week. Almost 7 years ago on his Facebook page he wrote, “Hello, everyone… I am a member of the clergy who just happens to be a die-hard Moxie aficionado… Earlier this week I celebrated communion with a can of Moxie and graham crackers… Y’all should try it sometime!” I think I would have liked him! When interviewed 9 years ago about receiving his doctorate at age 49, he said these wise words: “One of the things that I focus on is the value of mentoring in ministry and in leadership of the church. I try to instill in the people of my congregation that they’re each in ministry, that ministry isn’t limited to the guy who stands in the pulpit and wears the big robe and preaches the big sermon. Ministry is also the person who takes a home cooked meal to their neighbor or who helps their neighbor by shoveling out their walkway.” Spot on!

B. TRUE SERVANTS GROW IN CHARACTER (v. 3b)

1. Note that there are only – get this – TWO qualifications for a true servant of the Lord: “full of the Spirit and wisdom”
2. Why just two? There are other passages on the qualifications of deacons. But the key word here is servant. It might not be a position in the church (although it might be an office). Rather, a servant is a person of godly character ministering with the gifts God has given him or her, and where God has wisely planted him or her.
3. “Full of the Spirit” – a complete reliance on the operation of the Spirit of God to do the work which God has designed for you to do. We could go into an extended study in the Spirit of God – and maybe some day we will. But for now it is sufficient to know that God’s Spirit is operating in you. And all He desires is your…SURRENDER to Him. Daily. Moment by moment.

ILLUSTRATION:

I was asked to officiate a “Celebration of Life” service yesterday. Before Friday, I didn’t even know that the deceased was one of my neighbors, although I’ve known him by his nickname for years. The Spirit of God is allowed to orchestrate the details of our lives for the glory of the Lord Jesus, even at a moment’s notice. Can we yield to such a wise Holy Spirit?
4. “Full of wisdom” Notice the Word doesn’t say full of “SMARTS”. True wisdom comes from a daily stillness, quietness before the Word of God. PERIOD. There is no other source of true wisdom. NONE! To be an effective leader, you must be one who is walking daily with the Lord.

C. TRUE SERVANTS ARE BLESSED TO SEE OTHERS SERVE (v. 5)

Just a quick note on what is said in verse 4. There is no doubt from what we read in the gospels and through the rest of the book of Acts: the original disciples served with MORE than just “prayer and the ministry of the word.” But that was the core of their accountability. And the follow up is that those who weren’t ministering as such were blessed by God and happy to be used where the Lord had wisely put them.
God’s work has no “favorites” nor “levels of accomplishment”. There is only ONE standard for God’s work. Do you know what it is? 1 Cor. 4:1-2: “So then, men ought to regard us as servants of Christ and as those entrusted with the secret things of God. Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove… FAITHFUL.”
Faithfulness is the only standard. Day in, day out, plug along. God’s servants – regardless where God places them – must be FAITHFUL!

CONCLUSION (v. 7)

The conclusion comes appropriately in verse 7. There was a widespread influence of the church, and the number of those who served increased as well. Yes, the numbers increased. That will come when the principle is met: “whatever you so, you will reap”. If we sow much, we will reap much. And God gives the increase! Wow.
So, are you a child of the King? IF SO, God has called you to be a servant of God! He desires your SURRENDER to the operation of the Spirit of God in your life. And He desires your daily walk with the Lord. That’s it!

Prayer

May the Lord give grace where He has wisely planted each of us in our exciting ministry here in Earlville.

Comebacks from Setbacks

Week Six, 2018

COMEBACKS FROM SETBACKS

The LORD is my light and my salvation— whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life— of whom shall I be afraid? – Psalm 27:1

Every day we face obstacles and necessities, and we spend much of our time doing things that we must do, often things we would rather not do, again as often not doing things we wish to do. Yet we must try to do them in some way that is right, according to some standard of right that is both outside and above the details of our lives but also implicit in those details.

No matter how hard we try, sometimes we will make mistakes, big mistakes and little mistakes, all of which set us back. Sometimes we are the victim of things and events beyond our control that set us back. Our enemy will come against us simply because of our faith in the Lord. It is discouraging enough to face trouble because of a mistake you made, but what about the times when a storm hits you for no apparent reason?

The question is how we can turn those setbacks into comebacks. The Bible is full of people who had setbacks and made them into comebacks.

Consider Joseph. Through no sin or fault of his own, Joseph was sold into slavery by his brothers and endured years of false imprisonment. At all times, Joseph maintained his integrity and his faith in God. Even while he was subjected to such injustice, God was preparing him for a great future.

Eventually, God caused Joseph to rise to prominence as the most powerful official in Egypt, second only to Pharaoh himself. From this position, Joseph was instrumental in preserving the people of Egypt and the surrounding region, including his own family, through a time of great famine. When Joseph had the opportunity to take revenge on his brothers, he chose forgiveness and mercy instead, understanding that all that had happened to him was God’s way of preparing him for his destiny. If Joseph made a comeback, you can too.

Job represents what is certainly one of the greatest comeback stories in all of Scripture. Job lost everything. In one day he lost his wealth, his health, and his family. All he had left was his faith in God, and that proved to be enough. God had allowed Satan to test Job’s faith and integrity to the very limit, and Job passed the test. What the devil meant for Job’s destruction, God turned to Job’s good.

Struggles come in all shapes and sizes – fears, addictions, persecution, and worries can all seem to take over our thoughts. God tells us that we will face trials, but that we should not lose hope! Be encouraged, God has called you an overcomer!

SOMETIMES TRUE STORIES

Willie Taggart Lives His Dream:

Before making one of the most agonizing decisions of his 41-year-old existence, Willie Taggart sought lots of advice about leaving Oregon and going to FSU, but the most profound advice came from the oldest of his three kids. Will, a lanky 16-year-old who bears a stunning resemblance to his dad, approached Taggart and wife Taneshia as they were sitting on the sofa contemplating a move to Florida State after less than one calendar year in Eugene, Ore.

“Out of nowhere — I didn’t expect this — he said, ‘Dad, I know you’re struggling with this decision, and I know this is your dream job. You always tell me to chase my dreams and don’t let anyone get in the way of ’em. I don’t think it’s right for me or anyone else to stop you from chasing your dreams.’ And he said, ‘I don’t wanna leave, dad, but if you’re gonna chase your dream, I’m gonna ride with you.’ “

With that, Taggart said, he and Taneshia broke down.

The Peter Problem

Philippians 4:8

Peter!  First called Simon;

A disciple of Jesus Christ;

With brother Andrew, the first called to follow the Lord;

And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew His brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishers.  And He saith unto them, ‘Follow me and I will make you fishers of men.’  And they straightway left their nets, and followed Him.” (Matt 4:18-20)

A man bold enough to ask to walk on water;

And Peter answered Him and said, Lord, if it be thou bid me come to thee on the water.” (Matt 14:28)

A man blessed by the Father with the direct revelation that Jesus was the Christ, the Son of the living God;

And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou are the Christ, the Son of the living God.  And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in Heaven.” (Matt 16:16)

A friend close enough to be invited to the Mount of Transfiguration;

And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into a high mountain apart, and was transfigured before them; and His face did shine as the sun, and His raiment was white as the light.” Matt 17:1

A follower quick to proclaim his loyalty;

Peter answered and said unto Him, Though all men shall be offended because of thee, yet will I never be offended.” (Matt 26:33)

A chosen prayer partner at Gethsemane.

And He took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and very heavy.” (Matt 26:37)

Yes, Peter was a blessed man, a great man, a prominent man in the months that Jesus ministered on Earth. His name is mentioned in the Word 158 times, more than any name other than Jesus. Along with the brothers James and John, he was part of the inner circle of disciples that was with Jesus constantly.

Yet Peter, poor Peter, received the most stinging rebuke Jesus is recorded to have uttered. The Word says Jesus “turned, and said unto Peter,

Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offense to me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men.’” (Matt 16:23)

PETER!

Disciple,     Called,         Bold,       Blessed,

Friend,       Loyal,      Chosen.

Satan, an Offense.

Poor Peter. He wanted so much to love and serve Jesus, yet he still fell short. His human viewpoint trapped him. He savored the things of men more than the things of God. He was more focused on the physical well‑being of his friend Jesus than he was in the eternal plan of God the Father. Even after such a stinging rebuke, he persisted in his attempts to save Jesus from his destiny. He knew of the world to come, but his thought processes and his actions were solidly rooted in this world.

I believe that each Christian is, to some degree, “Peter.”  We know that the Jesus‑standard is to place the things of God above the things of man. The words of Matthew 6:33 , “But seek ye first the Kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you,”  come easily to our lips. But like Peter, we seem all too ready to slip into our foolish and temporal concerns, sometimes forgetting completely that there is a kingdom to be sought.

In Matthew 16:17, you can sense the rejoicing in Jesus’ words when He says, “Blessed art thou, Simon Bar‑jona: for flesh and blood have not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in Heaven.” Jesus was excited for His friend. He was joyful because of Peter’s spiritual success. When the voice of God speaks to you more loudly than the voice of the world, you are blessed.

In Matthew 16:23 , you can sense the revulsion in Jesus’ words when He says, “Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offense to me:” How strong, how painful a statement! What a stinging rebuke! In the vernacular of today, you might say, “Get out of here. You make me sick!”

The primacy of God, His Word and His plan over the things of the world is the rock bottom issue of Jesus’ life and teachings. Even as He agonized at Gethsemane, Jesus was still submissive to the plan of the Father. The Word was His standard. The world was nothing.

Let us be clear: Peter’s act was not an act of rebellion. It was an act of human passion and compassion. It was an act of misguided love. His was not an unwilling heart. His was an improperly focused mind.  As a result, he unwittingly became Satan’s mouthpiece, as that enemy tried to weaken Jesus’ resolve.

 As Peter demonstrated so clearly:

When we listen to the Spirit, we are blessed. (Matt 16:17)

When we listen to the flesh and the mind we are used of Satan. (Matt 16:23)

Today, we may be saved, we may live a somewhat obedient life, we may honor God and speak to others about His love and His grace. But where are our concerns? Are they in this temporary world? Or are they in the Kingdom of God? Surely we would not want to hear our Lord say to us, “Get thee behind me Satan: thou art an offense to me.”

BUT, Do we savor the things of God

Above the things of man?

Really?

Peter’s victory is seen as he later advised his readers, “Gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you . . .” (1 Peter 1:13)

Week Fifty-Two, 2017

FOLLOW THE LIGHT

After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him” (Matthew 2:1-2).

Christmas, coming right after the winter solstice is one of the longest and darkest nights of the year. It was on this night that God chose to send His light into the world. The light He sent was Jesus. The shepherds saw the physical light and it led them right to the spiritual light, where Jesus lay.

Later the kings of the East saw the star and were compelled to follow it. It led them to Jerusalem. There they meet King Herod of Judea, and asked where the king of the Jews had been born. Herod, following a verse from the Book of Micah interpreted as a prophecy, directed them to Bethlehem, to the south of Jerusalem. The star led them to Jesus’ in the town, where they worshiped him and gave him gifts. The Star of Bethlehem, or Christmas Star, appears only in the nativity story of the Gospel of Matthew. Some theologians claim that the star fulfilled a prophecy, known as the Star Prophecy.

There are two types of light in the world. We can perceive one, or both, or neither! When we are born into this world, we perceive physical light, and by it we learn of our Creator’s handiwork in the things we see. However, although that light is good, there is another Light, a Light so important that the Son of God had to come in order to both declare and impart it to men. John 8:12 records, “When Jesus spoke again to the people, He said, ‘I am the Light of the World. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but have the light of life.’” The allegory used by the Lord in this verse speaks of the light of His Truth, the light of His Word, the light of Eternal Life. Those who perceive the true Light will never walk in spiritual darkness.

We take a candle into a room to dispel the darkness. Likewise, the Light of Jesus Christ has to be taken into the darkness of sin that engulfs the hearts and lives of those who are not following Him. That’s the condition behind having this Light—that we follow Him. If we do not follow Him, we will not have this light, this truth, this eternal life.

All but the blind see the physical light, but only those who have surrendered to Jesus and repent and asked forgiveness of their sin can truly see the spiritual light. If the blind have not, then they will continue to wander in spiritual darkness.

As the light summoned the shepherds and the wise men, the light calls us to the Messiah.

That in essence is the light of the Christmas story.

Let there be light!

Week Forty-Nine, 2017

LET THERE BE LIGHT

And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.

—Genesis 1:3

Let There Be Light is a 2017 American Christian drama film directed by and starring Kevin Sorbo and written by Dan Gordon and Sam Sorbo. The plot follows an atheist who goes through a near-death experience in an auto accident and converts to Christianity. Sean Hannity is the executive producer and appears in the film.

I highly recommend it as a must see. Christian movies often don’t do well at the box office, but this one raked in $1.7 million in the first weekend of its release. I won’t spoil your viewing by telling you about the no dry eyes ending of the film, but it is a great depiction of the illumination of light that comes from a salvation experience.

The leading characters (actually husband and wife in real life) are a husband and wife. He is an avid atheist and one of the country’s leading experts and author on the validity of atheism. She is a committed Christian, who continually prays for her ex-husband to come to faith. He greatly resists, and then through a series of unfolding events, some good and some bad, he confesses his faith in Jesus Christ. It would be difficult for anyone to view this film and not clearly hear the Gospel message.

For some, coming to faith is an instantaneous experience, but for most it is a gradual process until the light goes on. Just as the dawn proceeds from darkness to light, our journey of faith progresses from darkness to light and then the relationship with our Lord shines so brightly.

What Coming to Jesus is Not:

▪ It is not about repeating a sinner’s prayer

▪ It is not about walking down an aisle

▪ Is is not about filling out a Decision Card

What Coming to Jesus Is:

▪ Confessing your sins and seeing your sinfulness and realizing your desperate need for the Savior

▪ Accepting Jesus as your personal Savior

▪ Believing with your heart and not just your head

▪ Relying on, fully trusting in, leaning upon, and resting in — Him

▪ Believing that He is your Savior first and allowing the Holy Spirit to help you make Him your Lord too

▪ Believing that there is no other way to the Father in Heaven except by Jesus Christ alone

“Butts, Bucks, and Bricks”

Is today’s Church all about “Butts, Bucks, and Bricks”?

Sounds cynical, but that appears to be the way it is.

To put it in more refined terms, hundreds of church pastors have relegated the saving of souls to increasing membership, accumulating money, and building mausoleums, even at the expense of surrendering biblical values, misleading God’s people, and opening membership to unrepentant sinful souls.

When Frank Becker published The Depression Proof Church: The Biblical Answer to the Church in Crisis,” it was hailed by a few and hated by many, much as Jesus was rejected by the religious rulers of His day.
