Week Forty-Six, 2024
The glory of youths is their strength, but the beauty of the aged is their grey hair. Proverbs 20:29
One out of five American adults are classified as seniors and as the “baby boomers” reach that stage in a couple of years, it will be close to one out of four. Seniors account for nearly a quarter of economic transactions in the country. We are a graying society and the church is no exception.
It doesn’t matter how old you are – if you’re alive, God is not done with you. It doesn’t matter how far you’ve strayed – if you’re alive, God is not done with you. Just look at Abraham and Sarah. God is still in the miracle business and seniors should be in the service business.
And when I am old and gray, O God, do not forsake me, Until I declare Your strength to this generation, Your power to all who are to come. Psalm 71:18
As Rich Jensen recently wrote, at some point in our lives we begin to think about what we will leave behind, for our family, our community and beyond. We go through careful thought about our physical assets. Which of our children should get particular items of sentimental value? How should our money be distributed? Should we leave something to charities or the church?
It’s not just our assets that are our legacy. What kind of world are we leaving? Have we cared for and preserved the value of life that was given to us by our parents, including a government that enables liberty and prosperity to grow?
Those may be good things to think about, but they are all temporary. What about the legacy that our children will follow us into an eternal paradise, which is Heaven, because we have shown them that the way there is through Jesus Christ, and Him alone. That’s the everlasting legacy into which we should invest.
As we age there are some things we are no longer able to do, but worshiping God is not among them. We are never too old to confess our sins and give our life to Jesus and we are never too old to lead others, especially those in our family to Him.
Leaving a Jesus filled legacy to those who follow us is more important and valuable than anything else we could leave. Now, start building your legacy.
Sometimes True Stories
Dr. Ted Traylor, pastor of Olive Baptist Church in Pensacola, Florida, says it this way, “Passion is a consuming, motivating love and commitment for someone or something. In this context, it is a burning desire to please God above men.”
Passion is what drives men and women to desire more than what is expected. It’s a fire in the belly that drives one to go deeper… to try harder… to give that extra push.
Growth is a fundamental aspect of life. We begin to grow and develop physically, mentally, and emotionally from the moment we are born,” wrote author, speaker, and host of the podcast Passion Struck, John R. Miles. “As we progress through life, we seek new experiences and challenges that help us grow and develop as individuals.
